Combining biological with artificial materials brings principles of nature into the context of man-made materials exploiting the amazing functionality of nature for new methods, technologies and therapies. Comprehensive analysis of biological systems from microbes and fungi to plants and animals are carried out to decrypt natural control mechanisms. Rational design integrates this biological knowledge into multifunctional, synthetic molecules and polymer-based biomaterials for a multitude of applications from information processing, biotechnological production and purification, medical devices, implants and stem cell cultures.
